Launching of MV Swift on Windermere week beginning the 9th December 2019.

On the 11th December an historic occasion occurred when Windermere Lake Cruises new vessel the MV Swift was soft launched onto Windermere in the Lake District, UK .

Built by Netherlands-based boat-builder Damen, the new addition to the Windermere Lake Cruises fleet will be the largest craft to be ‘launched’ onto Windermere for more than 80 years.

Too large to transport by road, the size of the vessel means it is necessary to build it in smaller sections off-site before being transported to Lakeside for final assembly.

Two significant days in the build of the new boat:

  • Tuesday 10 December – MV Swift is successfully maneuvered into position from the build site to the pier
  • Wednesday 11 December – the boat is gently lowered into the water for the first time

Skylark Aerial Photography was asked to provide the aerial filming of this historic occasion. In addition to the aerial filming, ground filming and time lapse were used to capture the Swift being moved from where it was assembled to the Lakeside car park where it would be soft launched.

Additional time lapse was also provided by Coen de Jong from Holland. Coen was also present providing film work for the Damen the Dutch company building the Swift.

Aerial filming was carefully plan due to the crowds present and the weather which was particularly wet and windy. The time lapse and ground cameras were weather proof.

In addition to the filming over the three days (9th to 11th December), multiple aerial and ground based stills were also taken of this historic occasion.

The launch and filming went without a hitch. The MV Swift will be in service from early summer 2021.
