Helicopter Filming on Fashion shoot. Because Skylark Aerial Photography is licensed to use ground to air and ground to ground communication with a licensed transceiver and has taken the radio telegraphy exam we are able to provide aerial filming safely with other air users particularly aircraft and helicopters.
The requirement was to film a large twin engine helicopter on stand at the 4 star hotel, during take off and follow the helicopter round as it carried out a 360 in the air. Then follow the helicopter as it left the grounds over towards Basenthwaite in the Lake District. At all times both pilots (helicopter and drone) were in communication with each other.
Prior to the filming operation a full risk assessment was carried out by the pilots, safety heights were agreed, emergency procedures, return to home assigned points. It was agreed that the drone would climb and move away to a field well west of the zone should an emergency occur. As a precaution a spotter was in place using walkie talkie to communicate with the drone pilot. Hand signals were also agreed upon. The drone was to never get closer than 40 meters when the helicopter was in flight.
The drone was flown to the pre assigned position and began filming the helicopter as the engines started. When the helicopter started to lift off the drone followed this through. At a pre assigned level the helicopter began to rotate the drone began to rotate round at a level above to minimise turbulent from the rotors. When the helicopter had carried out its rotation it then left to the East, the drone followed this through.
Time for a battery change in preparation for the returning helicopter. After 10 minutes the helicopter return, drone pilot was contacted on the pre assigned frequency. With 2 mins to run from the approaching helicopter the drone left to meet the oncoming approach, with visuals established the helicopter was filmed coming back to the heli pad, landing and then the drone focused directly above on the spinning rotors. Job done.
