Greenburn Hydro Project. This is a very interesting project about to begin. This is medium term as it extends into Spring 2018 with multiple visits as the project progresses.
Aerial survey work for NT, Little Langdale Hydro Electric Project including aerial filming of the heli lifts.
Really looking forward to this one as you are out in the Fells using the latest mapping system and the latest drone. Lot of preparation work preparing flight plans for the drone and making sure it captures the detail. Out with Simon yesterday the NT Ranger for the area to look at the detail required and deploy a drone to ascertain heights, speeds operating areas.
Have also been using the latest virtual reality pilot programme to fly the planned route in Google Earth and see what the drone will see and go, all from your desk.

Greenburn Copper Mine
Greenburn Mine (also known as New Coniston Mine), close to Greenburn Beck and the disused Greenburn reservoir, is ‘widely regarded as the best preserved copper mine in the Lake District. The mine was mostly worked in the mid-19th century but may have been operated from the late 17th century. It closed in 1865 but later re-opened with activity possibly until 1940. The shafts of the mine reached a depth of 700 ft (210 m) below ground level. The mine workings featured the large Engine Shaft with winding and pumping gear powered by a 9.8 m overshot wheel various other shafts and adits, a spalling floor, a crushing mill powered by a second water-wheel, an inclined tramways and two preciptation tanks. There are remains of buildings including a smithy, office, two-storey accommodation block, dry store & miners’ changing house and explosives store.
Industrial heritage
From Stone Age axe factory to Victorian gunpowder works, the Langdale valleys have a rich industrial heritage, energised by water power as far back as the 15th century. The Greenburn valley is no exception. As a former copper mine, many features associated with its legacy are still in evidence and of much interest today. The remains of water sluices, leat systems and a waterwheel pit remain visible and the site is now a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM).
Green future with the Greenburn Hydro Project
From summer 2017 a significant project will commence, The Greenburn Hydro Project nestled in the heart of this valley. When complete it will provide a robust renewable energy solution in a landscape where few other opportunities exist to bring in a guaranteed income ‘stream’ to support our future conservation work in Little Langdale.
