Things are taking off for an aerial entrepreneur whose drone company is attracting business from around the world.
Simon Handley, owner of Skylark Aerial Photography in Old Hutton, made the move from working as an engineer for a large gas company to setting up and running his own business about two years ago.
“I had been doing that for about 22 years but I always had a keen interest in aeronautical stuff,” he said.
“I am a qualified private pilot and I had been building drones on my own for the last 10 years.”
It took six months to get all the Civil Aviation Authority qualifications necessary to fly the drone.
“I invested in a low cost quadcopter and I did a lot of practise learning to fly it and land it. I have to admit it wasn’t easy and I spent a good 20 hours just flying it and bit by bit I was able to control it.”
He now operates three drones, each worth thousands of pounds, the largest capable of reaching a maximum height of 10,000 feet with a range of three miles.
“You get a lot of people who come into the drone world thinking they can make a bit of money with a £500 drone, but if you are serious then you have to invest,” said Mr Handley.
“It’s a continual investment as well, because the drones are the tools of the trade and you have to maintain them like any other vehicle.
“What happens is that you are constantly switching between flying the drone and operating the camera. Flying the drone almost becomes a secondary thing. The drone is just a means to get the camera in the air.”
Mr Handley’s clients so far have included the Lake District Japan Forum, which wanted a film made to promote the area to the Japanese, the Great North Swim Run, as well as ITV, the BBC and TV companies from as far away as Japan and Australia.
Being based near the Lake District was a great advantage as footage of the area was always in demand, he said.
“You get a lot of companies coming up here to film, that’s a big advantage, and they want people who know the area as well so you can give them location advice.”
